maximum RAM for homebuilt new system on XP/Vista?

Hello, I try to allocate a memory block of 256MB using 'AllocateCommonBuffer', but I am able to allocate a maximum of 128MB of memory only. The system has 8GB of RAM ! I tried running the de-fragmenting software to use if that could be the issue. Any idea ? Thanks, Srivi.

Crucial tells me that we can replace the 256MB SODIMM with a 512MB SODIMM for a max of 1GB - thus not exceeding manufacturer's maximum spec for RAM on this beastie.
